This picture we are almost at the bottom. Was taken with another camera.
So on our second day we wake up early, bundle up, and head down to a coffee shop. We are meeting our guides from GRAVITY RIDE (google it). My dad and I are going to be riding bikes down the World's Most Dangerous Road. I know- WHY?! Well to say we did, of course! Hee Hee Hee
There are about 25 other idots waiting in the coffee shop to die on a remote road in a foregin country. Our guides come in, and off we go in teams of about 10-13 each. We have about an hour ride out of La Paz and up to the top of the Andes Mt. at 4,400 meters high (high enough to sky dive if we wanted to) During the ride we will descend over 11,800 ft. by the end of the day.
We get off the bus, and I am not joking- it is snowing! I cannot see my bike under me. After about 10 min. of directions and getting used to our brakes (which were GREAT!). Off we go! There are 13 in my group including a guide at the front and a guide at the end, and then the support bus with my children. The first part of the ride is actually paved while we are getting to the WMDR but remember it is snowing, traffic is going by, and the road is smaller than most driveways. I later realize it was probably a good thing not to have been able to see, the drop was CRAZY.
Within 10 minutes I can not feel my fingers or toes and I am soaking wet. I would have been freezing if I had not been focusing on staying alive. After an hour or so we get to the WMDR. We have dropped in altitude and can now start to see the jungle. It has stopped snowing but still raining a bit. Now the road is dirt and even smaller. In fact, lets just call it a trail that a van carrying my children will be "driving" on. But anyway, as we head down, it is just amazing. Amazing is not the word, there really is not even a word for it. We ride in a single row, well, because there is not room for more. It is really hard to focus on the path because the view is just so amazing. We stop for a picnic and to remove layers of clothes. We are dropping fast in altitude and it is getting warmer.
We end at an animal refuge which deserves its own blog. I am going to post pictures now because words fail me in trying to describe how amazing this was.
Note: Well I was going to upload but my camera card will not fit in this computer. So I will do it as soon as I can. PLEASE come back to this blog. I promise these pics are amazing.
